Herriman opened it's season by hosting a pre-season duel against Hunter (5A). The Mustangs came firing out of the gates with a quick pin at 138 lbs. by Jed Diederich (10) followed by pins at 145 lbs, 152 lbs, 160 lbs, and 170 lbs by Zac Hewitt (12), Jake Dansie (12), Jentry Diederich (12), and Corbin Mitchell (11)! The upset of the night came at 182 lbs. Drew Hale, wrestling up a weight class, knew it would be an up hill battle. Out matched and out muscled, Hale (10) fought out of multiple pinning combinations and found himself on his back, nearly getting pinned. As he entered the second round, he showed how well his body was conditioned and reversed his opponent to his back and finished him off!
The fireworks didn't stop as Dawson Wilkey (11) pinned his man at 195 lbs. Derek Webb (11) fell short on his first varsity start at 220 lbs, but HWT Seth Nelsen (10) got Herriman on the board with a forfeit.
At 106 lbs, Cade Halliday (9) lost a physical battle which was followed up by wins at 113 lbs, Tyler Schwendiman (9), and 120 lbs Hayden Hewitt (9). Conrad Tirado (12), facing a returning state placer, lost a close one at 126 lbs, also wrestling up a weight class. The night concluded with close loss by Jerron Castleton (10) at 132 lbs.
All in all, a very young and inexperienced team wrestled well and won the first home duel in Herriman's history by the score of 54-23. It was a great victory, but there is still a lot of growing that needs to happen before February!
Go Mustangs!
